Joint Service of Choral Evensong

On Thursday 28th November, we were delighted to welcome singers from Lancaster Royal Grammar School and Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School to sing with the Ripley Chapel Choir for our regular service of Choral Evensong.  For many of the singers present it was their first experience of singing this type of service (which has been sung in Cathedrals, Churches and Chapels in this form since 1549) and everyone rose to the challenge extremely well.  The repertoire included the setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis written for King’s College, Cambridge by Herbert Howells (featuring an excellent solo from Yr 12 tenor, Jason Roberts), as well as the exuberant anthem Lift up your heads by William Mathias.

Mr Gillthorpe shared the conducting for the service with Mr Edney, who is currently studying for a PGCE in Secondary Music with the Ripley Teaching School, on placement at LRGS before coming to Ripley in January.  The organ was played by our organ teacher, Mr Field, and the final organ voluntary was played by Yr 11 pupil, Lukas Walls.  The service was led by The Revd Canon Chris Newlands, Vicar of Lancaster.  Refreshments were provided by the Friends of Ripley St Thomas, with delicious cakes made by Mrs Kelly.

This superb service was hopefully the first of many such collaborations - we are looking forward to the next time.
