Freya leaps to Korfball international challenge

Over October half-term Freya Procter in Year 10 proved her worth in the growing sport of Korfball by making her national debut in the England youth squad in Flanders, Belgium.

This is the first time that any players from the North West have been represented in the England Korfball squad and Freya was joined by 16 year old Corin Maden from Lancaster Royal Grammar School.

Korfball is a mixed-gender team sport, similar to basketball and netball, played in more than 40 local primary schools over the last few years through Lancaster Phoenix. Freya joined her after-school Korfball club, 5 years ago whilst at Moorside Primary School and played for the North-West at inter-area competitions in the younger groups. She now plays for U16 team Lancaster Swifts as part of the North West U15 Korfball Academy and the senior team for 16+ who practice on Wednesday evenings at Lancaster Boys Grammar School.

Whilst in Belgium for 2 days, the players played 5 matches. Although they didn’t win (they came close in some), the experience was vital, meeting and networking with teams from Germany, Belgium, France and other UK players.

Both players will now be looking forward to the summer:

“The trip to Flanders was amazing –the journey down to Folkstone was tiring but the 2 days in Flanders were really exciting and I’m now looking forward to the chance of selection for the Korfball U15s World Cup in the summer!”

Freya

We wish Freya and her fellow team mates all the best for the future – good luck in the summer and well done for keeping up with the sport for so long since Moorside Primary School!
