Bay Learning Trust bringing out the scientist in everyone
On Monday 4 November 2024, Ripley Science department was delighted to host the IET Faraday Challenge, lead by a team of STEM ambassadors and engineers from STEM First.
Six teams of six pupils from all secondary schools within the Bay Learning Trust took part in the day-long project to design, build and present a range of engineering products which were judged as part of a national competition. The exact designs and instructions for the projects are TOP SECRET!
Year 8 teams from Ripley St Thomas, Central Lancaster High School, Carnforth High School, Longridge High School and Morecambe Bay Academy beavered away throughout the day working on their top-secret products. However, we can reveal that the team from Central Lancaster High School were victorious and we would like to wish them the best of luck as they compete in future stages of this competition.
We were also delighted to welcome back into school two previous Ripley Sixth Formers as ambassadors – Darcie Meehan and Elysha Collins. Both are now undergoing higher apprenticeships with BAE Systems – Darcie is sky high at Warton, working on jets, while Elysha is underwater in nuclear subs at Barrow in Furness! They were also joined by STEM ambassador Anna Bonehill. They were all amazing inspiration for our younger pupils, showing how STEM subjects can lead to some amazing opportunities in the future.
We would also like to thank our Delivery team for the day, Rachel Brickell and Philip Hargreaves, who comfortably lead the event. They commented on how impeccably behaved pupils had been and how they had smashed their presentations, emphasising how difficult a task it was to present ideas to a large group of people who had never met before.
At Ripley, we look forward to continually providing opportunities such as this in an attempt to ‘bring out the scientist in everyone’.
