Year 10 visit to Heysham Nuclear Power Station
Yesterday, Year 10s were given the opportunity to learn about the operations and career opportunities relating to nuclear power at Heysham Nuclear Power Station.
During their visit they were given a presentation on the workings of the power stations and how they contribute to the wider energy network here in the UK. Following this was a talk on the many career opportunities across the country and routes available.
After lunch the students were fitted in their PPE including some very flashy hardhats! The tour included the control room, housing over 6000 buttons and has been manned since operation started in 1988. They then moved on to the turbine hall which houses ten turbines and two, ten metre long generators. The pupils were fortunate enough to see one of the turbines out of its casing and see both its sheer size and complexity.
Overall they had an interesting and enjoyable day looking into the world of nuclear power and the opportunities it might present for them in the future.
