Letters from Auschwitz
Four of our Sixth Form History students (Anna T, Phoebe VF, Toni-Ann R and Sarah-Jane B) have been involved in the Holocaust Educational Trust's Lessons from Auschwitz programme this year.
As part of the programme, they undertook preparatory and reflection sessions with leaders from the HET and other local schools to help them consider key issues relating to the Holocaust and had the privilege of hearing from a Holocaust survivor. This included flying out to Poland as a one-day visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.
As part of their Next Steps project, our students have helped to organise and deliver a number of events to share their experiences and reflections within the wider school community. They have worked with Mrs Hanley to deliver a session of the broadcast of the HET’s live webcast of Holocaust survivor, Hedi Argent MBE, to their fellow year 12 and 13 students. They have also helped to deliver assemblies to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, which was held on 27th January. The theme for this year is ‘Fragility of Freedom’. Later in the year, when Year 9 students begin to study the Holocaust in their History lessons, our students will also present to the classes to further share their knowledge of this topic.
