Science Club TV Christmas Lectures excitement

Eight very excited Year 7 Science Club pupils travelled down to London on the train with Mr Meeks and Mrs Otterburn on Thursday 14 December. Their destination was to the recording of the televised Royal Institution Christmas Lectures to listen and interact with Professor Mike Wooldridge on the subject of Artificial Intelligence, as part of an audience of 200 children from across the UK.

The Christmas lectures are the most prestigious event in the Royal Institution calendar, dating from 1825, when Michael Faraday founded the series to engage and educate young people about science. They are the world’s longest running science television series, and always promise to inspire and amaze each year through explosive demonstrations and interactive experiments with the live theatre audience. They are aimed at an audience of 11-17 year olds, however they are accessible for people of all ages and all levels of scientific knowledge. Typically watched by families together, they are a Christmas family tradition on the BBC. Mrs Otterburn has watched them every year since she was a child and the Science department were incredibly excited about this opportunity.

As well as a TV appearance, the trip also involved a visit to the Lego shop and Leicester Square at a very magical time!

Don’t miss the screening of the event on BBC Four at 8pm on Wed 27 December 2023 – can you spot our pupils?
