Languages

Aims

KS3 – French

Our aim is to inspire a love of languages and an appreciation for different cultures. We want to broaden pupils’ horizons and educate them about the advantages of being globally aware and culturally sensitive. We aim to teach pupils the importance of being literate, of having excellent communication skills, and of speaking more than one language in our increasingly global community.

Lessons are highly interactive and pupils will practise the skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing throughout Key Stage 3. We will build an awareness of French grammar to enable pupils to manipulate language and express themselves with increasing confidence.

KS4 – French & Spanish

Building on the KS3 language learning strategies, pupils will be able to continue to develop their skills in French and/or start the study of Spanish ab initio. Pupils will deepen their knowledge and application of grammar and will widen their understanding and use of vocabulary. Throughout KS4, we will practise a range of examination style questions and skills to ensure pupils are well prepared for the GCSE examinations at the end of Year 11.

KS5 – French & Spanish A-level

French and Spanish help students develop confident, effective communication skills in the language and a thorough understanding of the culture of countries and communities where the language is spoken. It develops an interest in, and enthusiasm for, language learning and encourages students to consider their study of the language in a broader context. The course aims to enable students to develop and build on the skills acquired at GCSE, to enhance employment prospects and to develop their ability to write and speak in French and Spanish with accurate grammar and syntax for a range of purposes and to understand written or spoken French and Spanish in a variety of contexts and genres.
